On Sunday 19th October we flew Virgin Atlantic on our first visit to the United States of America, to be guests of Agnes' cousing, Doctor Padraig Carney, and his wife, Doctor Moira Carney at their home at Long Beach, California.
The flight was one of ten and a half hours direct from Heathrow to Los Angeles, flying over the southern tip of Greenland, Hudson Bay, the province of Quebec and entering the USA over North Dakota, at last approaching California from the east, over Las Vegas and the Nevada Desert.
For us it was an amazing experience and we were made exceptionally welcome by our kind hosts. We were able to visit the Huntington Library, Art Gallery and Botanical Gardens, Catalina Island 24 miles off the coast of Long Beach, Pasadena and the J Paul Getty Museum in the Brentwood Hills to the north of LA, and San Francisco and Muir Woods to see the giant coastal redwoods. We also had a fascinating visit to Alcatraz Island.
We were particularly delighted to meet two of Padraig's and Moira's sons and their delightful families who made us very welcome in their homes at Laguna Beach and Lake Forest in Orange County.
